Fall Foliage Memories
Growing up in Fayetteville, Arkansas in the Ozarks my favorite time was when the sugar maples turned. The cool crispness of autumn breeze was linked in my mind to the electric excitement of a fresh football season. Fall color always peaked the exact weekend of the Arkansas Razorbacks home game against arch rival Texas Longhorns. I vividly recall looking straight up into the translucent stained glass glow of scarlet and crimson of a spectacular sugar maple specimen at the corner of Maple and Mission. Surely the autumn color has never since been more brilliant.
Today I am privileged to live in Broomfield, Colorado near the Rocky Mountains. Autumn is fleeting here with the chance that an early snow will eliminate fall foliage almost as quickly as it emerges. Last fall we caught the golden beauty of aspens along Guanella Pass as we drove from the south up to the summit, only to be enveloped in a September snowstorm coming down the northern slope into Georgetown. This joyful outing yielded dozens of photos and three oil paintings so far. We plan a similar adventure next Saturday and will check out updated fall color conditions at www.parks.state.co.us/fall
